Sciatic pain relief
Anyone who has ever suffered from sciatic pain knows how painful this
can be. Fortunately most cases of sciatica will pass without the need
for medical treatment. Often some painkillers and cold packs can help
to ease the pain.
Chronic sciatic pain should be taken very seriously and be investigated
by a health practitioner.
What causes Sciatic Pain?
The pain is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, which could
be due to a prolapsed disc or osteoarthrits. The sciatic nerve is the
largest nerve in the body and starts in the lower back and runs through
the buttock and down the lower limb.
The sacroiliac joint is a very common cause of low back pain. This
is a synovial joint but one which does not possess much movement. Irritation
of this joint can give rise to severe degrees of pain in the back, radiation
down the leg.
True cases of sciatica are caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve
in the lumbar spine.
Will I get better?
The good news is that most people recover without surgery. Recovery
can take anything from about 3 weeks to 3 months.
If however you experience difficulty with bowel or bladder function,
or progressive leg weakness you must contact your doctor immediately.
