Neck Pain

One of the most common things that most people have to deal with at some point in their life is neck pain. It can come from many different reasons; some being from simple things such as muscle strains and some can come from more serious issues such as disc problems. No matter what the reason is that causes you to have neck pain, the main thing is to find out the cause and do what you can to treat it. While many forms of neck pain are curable, there are some conditions that you may have to deal with some pain but you can make it bearable and at least prevent it from getting worse. It is important to seek the advice of a medical professional if you are suffering with neck pain as it can be the sign of a bigger problem.

Symptoms of and Causes of Neck Pain

It can really help for you to know what signs to look for beside the obvious pain and it will also help to know what can cause the pain. One of the most common symptoms that a person will experience is a pain in the neck area. It can be sharp or it can be dull but there will definitely be pain. You may also notice that your neck is stiff and that you may have trouble doing things that you normally do each day such as just turning your head or even nodding. If the pain is persistent or more severe, you may notice that it radiates down your shoulders and possibly into your upper back area.

There can be a number of things that can bring on neck pain and one of the most common is muscle strain. This can be from doing too much of something such as stretching too far or stretching for too long. Some people may sleep in an awkward position which will cause a stiff neck the next day. Another common cause of neck pain can be from your joints being worn. Each and every part of your body can get weak or injured over time, from misuse or just everyday tasks and your neck is no exception. Over time you can develop what is known as osteoarthritis in the neck and this can be extremely painful.

Sometimes there are just things that you may not be able to help such as disorders in your disks. This can cause pain in many areas of the body with the neck being the most common. You may find that the cushion that is in between your vertebras in your back, can weaken and start to dry up. This will cause a narrowing of your spinal cord which houses the nerves to your body. When the cord becomes narrowed or damaged it can cause neck pain and you will want to watch out for such things known as bone spurs that can put pressure on the nerves that will cause neck pain as well as pain in other areas of the body.

Preventing and treating neck pain

In order to prevent neck pain it is important for you to take breaks from certain activities when you can; such as reading or driving or even working on a computer. If you sit at a desk all day then you will need to have your chair as well as the computer screen in the right position to prevent neck pain. Be sure to use the right size pillow when you go to sleep so you do not wake up with a kink in your neck. There are plenty of things that you can purchase to help with neck problems such as neck support pillows that are made specifically for proper neck positioning when resting as well as different support items that will help you keep your neck in the right position when you are up and moving around.
