Protect yourself from insect bites using natural solutions

How can I prevent insects from biting?

Midges love to feed in the evening. By the way, only the female midges do bite.

    • Wear long sleeves, trousers and socks if you can.

    • Protect any exposed skin with an insect repellent.

    • Shut your windows in the evening.

    • If you're sitting outside burn a candle containing Citronella.

Many people are concerned about the safety of synthetic products and opt for more natural solutions like neem.

Neem is a very powerful yet natural solution to help fight off these annoying little terrors.

The azadirachtin contained in neem stops insects from feeding and prevents them from growing properly and laying eggs. Neem based insecticides have been shown to be effective against over 200 different types of insects, including fleas, head lice and mosquitoes.

What can I do if I have been bitten by insects?

Try not to scratch the insect bite as this can lead to infection. Insect bites can be very itchy and you can get a variety of remedies in the chemist.

If you prefer natural solutions Tea Tree oil is very effective to ease the itch.

When out and about it is quite useful to have a little sachet of vinegar in your handbag as this can ease the itching and also prevent swelling.

Did you know that it only needs a cupful of standing water for hundreds of eggs to develop into adult midges.

Midges love standing water like in ponds, containers and water features to name just a few.

Therefore it is important to stop them from breeding.

Drain any water that is trapped in any kind of containers like buckets, wheelbarrows, paddling pools, dustbin lids etc.
If using a water butt make sure it has a close-fitting lid and any gaps are sealed so that the mosquitoes can't enter it to lay their eggs.

Keep your gutters clear of debris so that water can’t collect.

Make sure that you change the water in a bird bath at least once a week.
