10 Tips To Beat Insomnia

Credit Crunch, Swine Flu, Job Losses etc are enough reasons to cause sleepless nights for many people. At some point in their lives everybody probably has occasional sleeping problems caused by stress, worries or illness. In most cases this is temporarily and good sleep is restored once the problem has been dealt with.

A continuous lack of sleep can lead to health problems and to mental and physical fatigue and it is very important to restore a healthy sleep pattern as soon as possible.

The following tips are natural solutions which you can try and find the ones that work for you

    1. Get plenty of sleep before Midnight.

"One hour of sleep before midnight
      equals two hours after"

    2. Relax before going to bed. Go for a walk, listen to some calming music or have a warm bath.

    3. Avoid tea, coffee and cocoa or cola after 4pm. Try herbal tea or a hot milky drink instead.

    4. Have a note pad handy on your night table. This is helpful when your mind just can't relax. Write down everything that worries you or chores you have to do next day. Once it is written down you will be able to relax a bit better and you can tell yourself that tomorrow is enough time to deal with anything.

    5. Keep your bedroom well ventilated, dark and not too hot or cold. 15 - 10 Degrees C is ideal.

    6. If you suffer from circulation problems you might experience cold feet. If that is the case either warm your feet up in a warm footbath or take a hot water bottle to bed.

    7. Make sure your mattress and pillow is comfortable.
If a mattress is too hard it could cause numbness on your shoulders and hips when you lie on your side, or on the base of the spine and heels when you lie on your back.
A mattress which is too soft can cause discomfort because your spine is sagging.
Pillows: A good supporting pillow is as important as a quality mattress. The pillow should support your neck as well as your head. A feather pillow is good for circulation but not such a good idea if you suffer from allergies. In this case a foam pillow might be more appropriate.

    8. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
Learning EFT can be useful if you have emotional problems you find difficult to cope with. It is simple to learn and anyone can do it.

    9. Learn Relaxation Techniques such as Yoga or Meditation

    10. Herbal Remedies
Chamomile and Lavender are well known for their calming properties. Others are Lemon Balm, Hops, Passiflora or Valerian.
