Back Pain Relief

Back pain is the single largest cause of sickness absence in the UK according to NHS Direct. They also state that 7 out of 10 people are affected by lower back pain at some time in their lives.

If you have suffered a bout of back pain you will now how distressing it can be. There is not only the physical pain you have to cope with, but also the mental distress, especially when the back pain lasts for weeks or even longer.

Back Pain can be very disabilitating and yet often it is preventable.

Causes of Back Pain

  • Poor Posture
This is probably the most preventable. When sitting in front of a computer all day it helps to sit straight and make sure that the chair and desk are the right height.
Sitting for long hours also compresses the spine which in turn can lead to back problems.
Long distance drivers, truck drivers, bus or taxi drivers often suffer from back pain, from prolonged sitting in one position.

  • Injury
Many injuries occur due to inappropriate lifting of weights or heavy objects.

  • Psychological
It is also believed that back pain can be caused by emotional trauma and/or stress. Muscular tension resulting from suppressed emotions can be a cause of neck pain and headaches as well as back pain.

Whenever you suffer from back pain you are advised to seek advice from a health practitioner who will hopefully diagnose and prescribe the right treatment for you.

Following is a guide for some back pain aids and ideas which you might find helpful in coping with your particular back problem.

  • Leg Rest:
A leg rest is very helpful when you find lying on your back uncomfortable. With a leg rest you can put up your feet and relax. This position is ideal for resting tired legs and feet. A leg rest can provide relief from varicose veins, swollen ankles, phlebitis and oedema and is recommended for people with circulation or heart problems or damaged kidneys.

  • Knee Pillow: If hip problems, lower back and leg pains keep you awake at night, a knee pillow could help you enjoy a better night's sleep. A knee pillow keeps your knees apart, allowing your legs to stay naturally aligned with your pelvis. Pregnant women or women with pelvis problems will find a knee pillow particularly helpful. It may alos help men who are very heavy at the stomach. The excessive bulk and weight tend to tip the pelvis forward which results in back pain.

  • Neck Support Pillow: In order to avoid neck pain your head needs good support during the night. This can be achieved with a good pillow. Our Putnam Pillow cradles your head, supports your neck and correctly aligns your spine, whether you sleep on your back or side. The Putnam Pillow is also available in Visco Memory Foam. Sensitive to body temperature and a gel like feel. this pillow gives even pressure distribution. The memory foam pillow constantly re-adjusts to ensure weight is distributed evenly.

  • In the Car
If you spend a lot of time in the driver's seat make sure that your arms and legs are relaxed and your back is properly supported. Many newer cars have now adjustable lumbar support. If you car does not have this facility you could always get a lumbar support. Lumbar supports are available as back supports or lumbar rolls. These lumbar supporst come in various materials, inflatable, self-inflating, foam and memory foam. Our memory foam back supports are very useful for mobility scooters and wheelchairs too.

  • It is also important that the seat is well cushioned. If your seat is sagging or you just can't sit comfortably a wedge shaped pad might be the answer.

  • Belts for Back Pain
A back pain support belt can be helpful in the healing process of back pain after injury. Back belts come in different shapes and sizes.
